Donald Trump said something really stupid. If you don’t like the guy then you might be thinking “what’s new?”. Here’s the thing, he knows what’s incendiary. He knows the things to say that get people riled up. He also knows the things to say, like many other politicians before him from all over the world, that get some people to rally behind him and vote for him. However let’s stop and look at what he is really saying here.
“We have such amazing people in this country: smart, sharp, energetic, they’re amazing,” Trump said. “I was saying make America great again, and I actually think we can say now, and I really believe this, we’re gonna get things coming… we’re gonna get Apple to start building their damn computers and things in this country, instead of in other countries.”
If you’re reading this there’s a good chance you own an iPhone, iPad, iPod, Apple Watch or a Mac. A person might think, it would be great to get those manufacturing jobs back in the US. It would bring jobs and put money into the economy. Right now Apple gets their devices manufactured in China. China has a very different cultural attitude than North America. If you put aside the whole wage difference of what workers in China are willing to accept and what workers in the US will demand. There are many other differences to consider. In China the workers live on the premises of the factory. They will accept overtime shifts because it means more money. Do you think american workers would live at the factory? be willing to take many, many overtime shifts? As a consumer then, we would have to get used to later hardware releases. We would have to get used to things like long ship times becoming the norm because production volume can’t be met. Add in the increased time for parts to be shipped to the factory. Remember the Apple Pencil, which at launch a lot of people were already expecting wait times of a month.
As a consumer be prepared to lose a bit of the joy and mystery around device launches as well. In China factory workers can be searched in order to make sure they aren’t smuggling devices out of the factory. Secrecy can be demanded cutting down on pictures that appear online. In America I doubt the same treatment could be applied. I feel like there would be many more device and parts leaked. It’s very easy to say or think bringing the jobs back would fix all kinds of problems. In reality though I don’t think it’s quite that easy. This was a non comment to me. There are so many other things he could have taken a stand on. The encryption debate is important why didn’t he take a stand on that instead? You see people care about their privacy and besides the lines aren’t clearly drawn in the sand. Making a statement on such a hot button topic could have the wrong affect. Donald Trump wants to appear to say something important when in effect he’s not saying anything at all. He wants something that will fan the flames and get people talking about him.
